10,000 hours- there’s an old saying in the professional…
10,000 hours- there’s an old saying in the professional world that says you need to PRACTICE something for at least 10,000 hours to Master it.
There are other sayings like, “Practice Makes Perfect.”
Athletes, musicians, actors, and virtually all creators who amount to anything do so as a result of talent combined with VERY HARD WORK.
I say all of this to let all of you know, I still practice. ALL of the time. I’ve already done my first 10,000 hours. But
I never intended on stopping there.
For every 10 people that find an excuse as to why they can’t do something, there’s 1 person that find a way to do anything.
“I don’t have lights.”
“I can’t afford modifiers.”
“I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.”
This image is from one of my practice sessions with the incomparable @em.explores . Shot using a simple table lamp with a washcloth as a diffuser.
Start saying, “I CAN” and go make it happen. The only person stopping you is YOU.

Getting International- 2019 started off in Cuba with a wild trip to Havana and more. This pic of @em.explores of her hanging out of a taxi we took was just a 30 second shoot that was a blast!
Starting next month the international locations are going to resume starting with a stop at The Photo Show in Birmingham where we’ll be doing a Photo Walk as well as appearances at the show and Rotolight booth.
After that we’ll be heading down to London for a Advanced Creative Lighting Workshop that is going to be AWESOME March 25-27th.

Black Light-Black and White..with the new Canon EOS-R…
Last night was a pretty crazy night doing my first shoot with the Full Frame Canon Mirrorless. I had the opportunity to shoot with both the 50mm f/1.2 and the 28-70 f/2 lenses.
This particular image is with the 28-70 at f/2, lit completely using black lights. In other shots we added some fog into the mix to catch and reflect the black light going on.
@em.explores killed it as usual and used some crazy stuff on her face to reflect and catch the black light including toothpaste!!
I can’t wait to release more pics and videos from the new Canon camera. It’s going to be an interesting ride…:)
A BIG THANKS to Oscar Aguila and the folks at 4 Wall Entertainment for making last night possible. It’s a fantastic facility with a plethora of products that can make photography truly FUN. These guys do all the stuff for the Oscars and Grammy’s….so you know it good!

Natural light, ambient light, or artificial light will work no matter what you use…
So in that spirit I’m diving into seeing what the different brands out there can do with using light.

Opening Up the Playbook- I can’t tell you how excited I am for 2019. It’s going to be a year where we really open up what we do in a way that’s very exciting for everyone to be able to follow.
For many years I’ve been a Nikon or Sony shooter. I love both of those brands and the people associated with them. And I’m still very much a Sony shooter.
But after releasing my first Nikon video in 5 years, I can’t tell you how many people have sent messages or posted comments thanking me for reaching out to other brands and helping photographers to see what else is out there.
I’m very blessed that I’m in the position to be able to get my hands on virtually any photography gear on the planet. I’ve decided to use this position to help benefit people out there who want to see and know about gear but aren’t necessarily in the same position to be able to try it before buying it.
And I’m so sick of just hearing about specs….I want to REALLY know what matters most. WHAT CAN I PRODUCE WITH THIS GEAR??
I also am cognizant of the fact that I have followers who use all different types of gear and I want to be able to relate to them as well. That’s something I’ve thought about for years and now it’s time to relate a little bit more to everyone.
So, let the games begin. Competition is good for any society and industry to be able to bring out the best in the marketplace.
By nature I’m a very curious individual. And I’m feeling that curiosity bug like never before.
As we speak I have two new camera systems coming to my place to shoot with next week. It’s gonna be an adventure and I can’t wait to share it with all of you…

Framing- one of the most challenging things for photographers is to compose and frame a shot. This image taken at my workshop at the Salton Sea shows how I chose to frame the image with @em.explores in between the environment and the building.
The other thing to note is the straight lines. You need to line up your lines with something straight in the composition to make them correct.
I lit the shot using the Rotolight Anova Pro 2 to give it a spotlight effect.
The sky? Well sunset at the Salton Sea is just beautiful. We’ll be showing select footage of this workshop in an upcoming video.

Training a Protégée- one of the best things about my career has been to help others achieve their dreams.
Whether that’s in a big or small way, I enjoy helping others in any way I can.
Over the past 8 months I’ve been able to start training and be a true mentor to @em.explores. It’s been quite a ride, and it’s been so rewarding to watch her grow.
May the future be as bright for her as I see it to be.

Getting POP out of your images using long lenses and wide…
Getting POP out of your images using long lenses and wide apertures….as I’m working through some of the old pics I took in 2018 I came across this one I took of Emily at the Oceanside Pier using the Sony 400mm f/2.8.
The longer lens you use the more the laws of compression come into play which means you pull the background into the shot more.
While shooting her under the pier this effect is illustrated by the columns which are behind @em.explores
Long lenses aren’t the easiest to use and with this one I needed walkie talkies to speak with my models lol….but
The results can be amazing!!
Settings: Sony A9, 1/1600 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100. Flash fired.
